Metadata is the information about your information — the invisible layer of data that describes every photo, document, and file you create and share. It can reveal where you were, what device you used, who you work for, what edits you made, and dozens of other details you never meant to disclose. What is metadata, exactly?

Every digital file has two layers: the content (the pixels of a photo, the text of a document, the audio of a music file) and the metadata (structured information describing the content). Metadata was invented for legitimate reasons — photographers wanted to remember what camera settings they used, librarians needed to catalog documents, video producers needed to track edit history. What metadata reveals about you

Who cares about your metadata?

Stalkers and abusive ex-partners

Building the habit: a metadata hygiene routine
